Most woodworking professionals have only the imprecise idea of how much clamping force to put on when gluing boards. Even those obsessives who depend on on dial calipers and feeler gauges when cutting and planing wood frequently judge clamping pressure simply by the amount of glue that squashes out. The consequences are occasional joint let-downs and awkward gaps between boards on the ends of tabletops. Throughout my career in wood technology I’ve done technical studies of glue joints using diverse types of glue, different clamping pressures, different grain orientations and different species of wood.
